What Works and Doesn’t Work in the New Suicide Squad Trailer

We didn’t only get Wonder Woman footage last night, but we also got a brand new trailer for Suicide Squad.

And it’s wildly different than anything DC has done before. It’s… fun!

See what I mean? Still, there’s a lot going on in the trailer and given how much it contrasts with the first trailer, it’s difficult to pin down what the actual film is going to be like.

It’s hard not to immediately draw parallels to Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, from using a hit 1970s song to plenty of quips and showcasing a band of misfits.

But can DC really be blamed for that? GOTG was a huge surprise hit for Marvel and as it is, Suicide Squad is DC’s biggest gamble yet. Plus, DC is years behind Marvel, at least in terms of building a cinematic universe. They’re accelerating the process and have made some interesting choices for their upcoming films, even if past films haven’t left fans with much faith. (But hey, they are getting to the first female-led film before Marvel.)

It’s also impossible to tell if this trailer actually reveals the tone for the film, or if it’s just a marketing ploy. Clearly there’s humor in the script, and it’s a little more colorful, so there might be a gem here.

There’s plenty that works here – fans seem to be split over Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, but I think she looks fabulous. One of the biggest draws in the trailer for me was Will Smith as Deadshot, but then again, when isn’t Will Smith awesome?

I’m now even more curious about that rumored love triangle, as boring and overdone as love triangles can be.

Also, the editing with “Bohemian Rhapsody” is excellent. It’s some of the best editing I’ve seen in a trailer, and every beat lands its mark.

I’m still not convinced this film needs the Joker (Jared Leto), or that he really fits. There’s a shot in the trailer (at the 1:59 mark) which reveals we’ll be getting some of Harley’s origin story, although curiously the Joker is in the vat of acid with her. Then again, a movie about Harley breaking free of the Joker, which director David Ayer has already confirmed, is something I’ll always be on board with.

As hyped as Leto’s Joker is, I think it’s the rest of the characters that are far more interesting in this film.

Consensus: This trailer is great, and reveals a whole new side of DC that I am way more excited to see than I ever was before, but I don’t think it’s a sure indication of the film’s actual quality and tone.

I guess we’ll just have to wait until fall to find out!

Suicide Squad is set to come out on August 5, 2016. It will be directed by David Ayer and will star Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Will Smith, Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, Cara Delevingne, Scott Eastwood, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ike Barinholtz, Jim Parrack and Adam Beach.

How do you guys feel about the trailer? Sound off in the comments!
