J.J. Abrams Gives Us Names and a Secret Code

If you’re anything like us, you still have the trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens playing on repeat. Now we can put names with the new faces in the Star Wars universe.

Director J.J. Abrams and President of LucasFilm Kathleen Kennedy released some character names exclusively to Entertainment Weekly in a way that will make any Star Wars fan smile. When the first film came out in 1977, Topps Trading Card Company released 5 rounds of trading cards for the original trilogy designated with different colors, starting with red and blue. Abrams released the characters seen in the trailer for the upcoming film in the same vein.

Now you don’t have to call it the soccer ball droid anymore!
There goes our hopes of Oscar Isaac being related to Wedge Antilles. Pretty interesting name!
What do you think of the name Kylo Ren for this Sith?
Interestingly she doesn’t have a last name listed. Could she still be Han and Leia’s daughter and they wanted to keep that secret? Or does she not know herself?
John Boyega’s Stormtrooper is named Finn – but why is he on the run?
Is that Stormtrooper Finn? And why is he so much shorter than the rest of them?
Nothing gets us excited quite like Rebel pilots!
When we all collectively lost it.
When the numbering of these cards, Abrams confirmed that the numbers are significant and purposely chosen.

We presume Abrams and Kennedy have only decided to release the names of the characters seen in the trailer, which means there are still plenty more coming our way with Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie, Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow, and Andy Serkis, and that doesn’t even though on what’s come for our original trio.

So what do you think of these name reveals and how it was done? What do you think the numbering means? Let us know in the comments!

Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, directed by J.J. Abrams and starring Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, and Gwendoline Christie, is set to come out on December 18, 2015.
