The Dune: Part Two Release Dates That Weren’t
As you might recall, the release of the original Dune film in 2021 was also plagued by numerous delays, including because of the pandemic. But it was well worth the wait and still performed extremely well at the box office, as well as garnering six Academy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and various other accolades. So, there’s no reason to believe Dune 2 will disappoint its anxious and expectant audience.
So, what were the Dune: Part Two release dates that didn’t hold, and what brought about the postponements?
October 20, 2023
The success of the first film led Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment to greenlight a sequel originally targeted for late 2023 release. In fact, October 20, 2023, was the date first announced back in 2021. But WB found itself juggling and adjusting that date and the November 3 and 17 dates below in an effort to schedule around other studios’ releases such as Blade from Marvel, Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, and Trolls Band Together (Trolls 3) from DreamWorks and Universal.
November 17, 2023
When the original October 2023 date didn’t work out, Warner Bros. set their sights and our expectations for November 17, and then moved it back to November 3 in their ongoing struggle to fit Dune 2 in-between the other major films coming out from competitive studios. But once again, that date was destined to be changed as well.
November 3, 2023
In addition to the date juggling mentioned above, along came the Hollywood screenwriters’ and actors’ strike, and Warner Bros. and the other studios found themselves pushing out their movie release dates. That included Dune: Part Two, now scheduled for March 15, 2024. Cross your fingers that it makes that target and we can all return to the land of Spice, Paul Atreides, Chani, and the Fremen people on the inhospitable desert planet called Arrakis!
