Rian Johnson Gets Blank Canvas for New Star Wars Trilogy

We’re a mere month and change away from the latest installment of the Skywalker Saga, Star Wars: The Last Jedi. It’s the second of this brand new trilogy of films featuring our favorite characters merging with a new crop of young stars, continuing on the Skywalker legacy. This time around, Rian Johnson serves as writer and director, set to bring a fresh set of eyes and unique vision to the franchise we love. And it turns out it won’t be his only venture in this much beloved universe. Johnson (aided by his longtime collaborator Ram Bergman as producer) will write and direct a new trilogy of films that will fall under the Star Wars umbrella, but will be an entirely new story with newly created characters set in a corner of the galaxy that has previously never been explored.

“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm on StarWars.com’s official release. “He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”

Johnson has a unique way of storytelling, witnessed with films like Brick and Looper. He brings something exciting to the Star Wars universe and we’ll get to see exactly what that is when The Last Jedi hits theaters in mid-December. No release dates have been set for this new trilogy of films but we can only start hoping that there will at least be one porg as part of the main cast of characters (or hoping against it, if you’re a dark heartless kind of person who hates adorable puffin-like creatures with giant lovable eyes).

What do you think of the news? Are you excited about a new trilogy featuring BRAND new characters, stories, and locations? What else can we expect from the Star Wars universe outside of what we already know? Let’s talk about it in the comments below!
