The Ajax is brought to life by model builder Bob Lindenmayer, who is not only an experienced model craftsman but also a huge Flash Gordon fan. Among the movie’s cult following he’s known as “The Curator” for his collection of props, costumes and other artifacts from the film.
He’s brought all his technical expertise and fan enthusiasm to this exceptionally detailed War Rocket Ajax replica statue, more than two years in the making.
“Obviously,” Lindenmayer told fan website Gordon’s Alive!, “if you’re going to make Flash Gordon replicas, you have to make the Ajax.” The model used in on screen was destroyed during filming, but Lindenmayer owns a replica built by the original model-maker. Lindenmayer and the crew at Chronicle Collectibles – who are “big Flash fans too” – relied on that model and “tons of archival photos” to create this lavish replica, one of the largest Chronicle has made.
The War Rocket Ajax is an impressive 31-inches long and 13-inches wide and stands 17-inches tall on its display stand. Intricately sculpted and painstakingly painted, this museum-quality model takes “screen-accurate” to a whole new level.
