Celebrate Fashionista Minnie Mouse This Polka Dot Day

When most people think of Disney, a few distinct characters come to mind. Mickey Mouse, Goofy, and Donald Duck are among the top of the list. Of course, you can’t overlook Minnie Mouse! The affectionate and sensible leading lady has changed a lot over the past 88 years. Let’s take a look back at what makes her so loveable.

Minnie’s Debut

Minnie Mouse made one of her first appearances in the 1928 animated short Steamboat Willie. This was the most popular of the Walt Disney shorts released during that time. These early productions mainly centered on Mickey Mouse pining for the affections of Minnie, while rival Pete usually got in the way.

Minnie Mouse Style

In the early days Minnie sported a skirt, pillbox hat, and pointed shoes. Fans of the classic short films will notice that she had yet to rock the polka dot that she is most famous for today. Back then the polka dot was too difficult to control in animation, so she wore a plan skirt in the films. However, the polka dot was made front and center in all still drawings of her. Overtime, as animation improved, Minnie was given a polka dot skirt full time.

Constant Evolution

Along with her fashion sense, the character of Minnie Mouse has also been through some changes. Minnie was mainly a damsel in distress for the bulk of her career. Never one to sit back, though, she’s since moved on to being a fully fleshed out character in numerous movies, TV shows, and video games.

While Minnie sometimes mixes up her wardrobe to include solid colors, she always goes back to her signature polka dot. Her most famous outfit is that of a red and white polka dot dress with matching bow, white bloomers, and yellow high heels.

Rock the Dots Events

In fact, Minnie is so well known for her love of polka dots that she was the inspiration for the Rock the Dots Art and Fashion Show. Last year’s event took place on January 22, 2016 and featured an interactive exhibit displaying apparel designed by artists from around the world inspired by Minnie Mouse and her polka dots. Look for even more events coming this Sunday to celebrate Rock the Dots and Polka Dot Day.

Truly, Minnie Mouse is a style icon, and one that we can hope will continue to influence us for years to come.
