AMITYVILLE: THE AWAKENING (JUNE 30)
A single mother (Jennifer Jason Leigh) and her children move into a new house to facilitate the treatment of a comatose son (Monaghan, who’s made quite the career of playing creepy guys) only to uncover its bloody history when several strange phenomena – including the miraculous recovery of the son – occur. Believe it or not, this will be the SEVENTEENTH installment in the horror classic, Amityville saga, and Awakening is finally being released after more than two years of delays. Good grief.
ANNABELLE 2 (AUGUST 11)
Twenty years after the tragic death of their daughter, a dollmaker (Anthony LaPaglia) and his wife (Miranda Otto) welcome a nun and several girls from a closed orphanage into their home. It isn’t long before the girls become the target of the dollmaker’s possessed creation: Annabelle. So we’ll have plenty of creepy religious iconography plus creepy kids plus the creepy doll. What a winning combination!
IT (SEPTEMBER 8)
The latest re-imagining of a Stephen King classic. Seven outcasts must face off against a malevolent child-killing entity calling itself Pennywise (Bill Skarsgård) to save their small town of Derry, Maine. Co-starring Stranger Things alum Wolfhard, this is sure to make a whole new generation develop coulrophobia.
FLATLINERS (SEPTEMBER 29)
Medical students experiment with near-death experiences – until playing God begins to jeopardize their lives. Not a reboot but a sequel to the original film, set twenty-seven years later, with Sutherland reprising his role as Nelson. Also starring former vampire Nina Dobrev (The Vampire Diaries) and erstwhile rebel captain Diego Luna (Rogue One).
FRIDAY THE 13TH (OCTOBER 13)
We don’t know much yet about this reboot/remake – just that it’s being directed by Breck Eisner (The Crazies, Sahara, The Last Witch Hunter), and will be released on an actual Friday the 13th. But then we already know what to expect from the hockey mask-wearing, machete-wielding mass murderer Jason Voorhees at this point, yeah?
INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 4 (OCTOBER 20)
This is another one still in production, so the details are more than a little scanty. During the press tour for Insidious: Chapter 3, writer and director Leigh Whannell implied that this installment will take place closer to the first film, and will continue to focus on medium Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye).
SAW: LEGACY (OCTOBER 27)
The eighth (*phew!*) installment in the Saw franchise, Legacy is being described as a “reinvention” of the series, according to composer Charlie Clouser. Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger are writing the script, with Michael and Peter Spierig directing, but casting is still unconfirmed and there has been no major plot reveals as of yet.
