The film version of the classic board game, Clue, may have been initially panned by critics and audiences alike – hard to believe, I know – but in the thirty years since its release it’s become a beloved cult classic.
So, naturally, FOX has decided it’s high time for a remake.
The belated success of the original was due to a pun-laden, infinitely quotable script and a crazy talented cast that included Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Martin Mull, and Christopher Lloyd. (Kahn and Curry’s shoes in particular are going to be hard ones to fill.)
There’s no news yet who the studios are eyeing in terms of casting. But if executive producer Ryan Jones and producer Josh Feldman (of Hasbro Studios) want this new film to be a box office bonanza straight out of the gate, they’re going to have to get some serious(ly funny) talent both in front of and behind the camera.
Details are scanty thus far, but there’s a rumor that this production may be more of a globe-trotting adventure rather than a parlor room mystery. It’ll be interesting to see how they update and expand the original scenario if that’s the case.
A Clue remake is only one of several board game-based films Hasbro Studios currently has in the pipeline — we’ll be getting a Candy Land, Risk, and Monopoly movie in the next few years, too. While the core story of Clue made for an easy transition to the big screen, it remains to be seen how successful the other games will be as adaptations.
