Brad Bird Is Three-Quarters Through the Script for The Incredibles 2

Marvel and DC aren’t the only players in town getting in on the action of superhero movies.

Pixar director Brad Bird is getting to work on the highly anticipated The Incredibles 2.

In speaking with Collider, Brad gave an update on the script:

“I have the story arc. I’m probably three-quarters through the script, first pass through the script, but we’re already boarding parts of it. I’ve got a lot of people that worked on the first one working on it, so we’re all having a good time with it.”

Pixar is known for being wonderful storytellers so while Brad gives no details, there’s no doubt in my mind that whatever the story arc turns out to be, it’s going to be worthwhile.

He’s also aware (as we all are, I’m sure) that the superhero genre is the favorite in Hollywood right now, to the point where people are starting to discuss its over-saturation and eventual demise. However, Bird seems to know how to navigate this tricky situation:

“But what’s changed is there were only two other superhero franchises at the time Incredibles came out. One of them was X-Men and the other was Spider-Man, and now there are 400 billion of them and there’s a new superhero movie every two weeks. What you don’t want to do is trot over the same turf in the same way everyone else is. So we’re trying to keep it focused in the area that our film was, which was a little bit more about characters and relationships and stuff like that, and see where that takes us.”

The Incredibles 2 has a couple things going for it to make it stand apart from other superhero films, such as being animated and about a family, but it can’t coast on those differences. If anyone knows that, it’s Pixar and Brad Bird.

The heart of the film really rests with the Parr family, so it’ll be exciting to see where they are when the sequel begins, whether Dash and Violet and Jack-Jack have grown up, or if it’s a more direct sequel.

There’s no release date yet, but Bird interestingly recalls in the interview that The Incredibles was originally intended to come out later than it did but due to the film finishing quicker than anticipated, it was moved up.

Pixar has a pretty full slate right now, but depending on production, it sounds like we could see The Incredibles 2 sooner than we think.
