Last year, Universal raced to $1 billion domestically in 165 days thanks to box office juggernauts like Jurassic World, Furious 7, and Minions. But the House of Mouse has stepped up to the plate and hit it out of the park – with three runners on base, and no, I have no idea where this baseball analogy came from.
Anyway, Disney has crossed the $1 billion threshold in only 128 days, absolutely smashing Universal’s record and pretty much guaranteeing they’ll be on top for a while.
It started with, unsurprisingly, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The continuation of the galactic franchise made an astounding $936 million domestically, with about $284 million of that at the start of 2016.
Since then, the studio has had three more big hits on their hands: Zootopia, with $328m and counting; The Jungle Book at $291m and counting; and Captain America: Civil War with $206m and counting.
These movies in particular show why this isn’t a huge shock: Disney now owns their own animation and live-action studios, Marvel, and Lucasfilm, not to mention Pixar, whose next film, Finding Dory, comes out next month.
With several more movies on the docket for all of these franchises and licenses, Disney should be comfortable at the top for a long time.
