Benicio del Toro and Laura Dern Cast in Star Wars: Episode VIII, Which Has Begun Production

Star Wars: Episode VIII is officially under way, despite being pushed back.

Lucasfilm released a press release for the film, as well as a video announcing production.

In the midst of this news, three new actors have been confirmed for Episode VIII.

Rumored back in July, Benicio del Toro officially joins the cast, and he’ll be accompanied by Jurassic Park’s Laura Dern as well as Kelly Marie Tran, who’s known for the NBC sitcom About a Boy and CollegeHumor originals.

It’s possible Tran got the role that actresses like Tatiana Maslany and Gina Rodriguez were once rumored for.

The press release also gave a vague synopsis for the film:

“Rey took her first steps into a larger world in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and will continue her epic journey with Finn, Poe, and Luke Skywalker in the next chapter of the continuing Star Wars saga, Star Wars: Episode VIII, which began principal photography at Pinewood Studios in London on February 15, 2016.”

From this teaser video, it looks like Episode VIII could start precisely where The Force Awakens ended, and show all of Rey’s journey.

Star Wars: Episode VIII is directed by Rian Johnson and stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Lupita Nyong’o, Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie, Anthony Daniels, Benicio del Toro, Laura Dern, Kelly Marie Tran, and Andy Serkis. It’s set to arrive on December 15, 2017.
