Hollywood can be a very weary place.
Today, Paramount revealed details for the next slate of Transformers films – all the way up to 2019.
The fifth Transformers film, which will follow Age of Extinction, is slated for 2017 and the 2018 film will highlight their very first spinoff film, all about the Autobot Bumblebee. Then, 2019 will premiere the sixth film, getting back to the main storyline.
Because this cinematic universe has a storyline, or… something.
I know why these films make money, and tons of it, enough to garner at least seven of them, but it doesn’t mean it’s not a shame.
There’s nothing inventive or unique about these Michael Bay flicks, and more often than not they’re banal and groan-inducing, rather than even being mindless, inoffensive fun. Arguably, the first one didn’t start off that bad, but they’ve certainly gotten there with every film that followed.
The biggest problem is when films like these make endless amounts of money to earn sequels, but genuinely great and creative fighting robot action films like Pacific Rim struggle to get a sequel at all.
These days I often hear people going on and on about the lack of original films in Hollywood, because they’re tired of sequels and reboots. Yet when original films roll around, these people don’t go see them and they don’t make any money. And the language that Hollywood understands easiest of all is green.
So now we’re saddled with (at least) three more Transformers films, and undoubtedly they’ll be exhausting.
This isn’t to say enjoying these films is wrong, or that taking joy in bad films is a problem, but Hollywood and its films should be held to higher standards. We as an audience can demand and want that.
Which is why I’m going to go home and watch Gipsy Danger, Striker Eureka, and Cherno Alpha kick some alien butt.
