Captain America: Civil War Trailer Arrives at Long Last and It’s Glorious

This year, I’m thankful for Marvel releasing the first official trailer for Captain America: Civil War.

I’ve been skeptical of this film (as I don’t think the comic story holds up very well) and how it will fit into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but I have stood by directors Joe and Anthony Russo and their writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely ever since they gave us the best Marvel film in the MCU, The Winter Soldier.

If this first trailer is anything to go by, we have an excellent film coming our way and I don’t need to be nearly as skeptical anymore.

The trailer opens with the clip we first saw in Ant-Man, where Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) have found Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan).

What follows is a wonderfully edited trailer with an increasingly intense musical theme thrumming through it.

There are some amazing action sequences, such as Steve and Bucky sharing Cap’s shield to take on Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) in his Iron Man suit, Sam’s new wings, Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) taking someone down, and basically every shot we get of newcomer T’Challa aka Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman). Seriously, he’s going to be awesome.

The movie seems to be taking in elements of Civil War in the comics with Thaddeus Ross (William Hurt) bringing in Steve to talk about superhero supervision/registration, partly stemming from the events of Age of Ultron nearly leveling a country (as seen by the document in this scene which reads “Sokovia Accords”) but also from people wanting Bucky to pay for his crimes as the brainwashed Winter Soldier (which I believe is how Black Panther will come into play).

Emotions run high in the trailer, with Steve and Bucky’s friendship at the center of things, which I think is a good way to structure this film. They are the relationship we as an audience have come to be invested in since Captain America: The First Avenger.

However, there are also some great scenes between Steve and Tony and it looks like characters won’t come out of this unscathed if the shot of Tony cradling an injured James Rhodes (Don Cheadle) in his War Machine suit is anything to go by.

This movie has serious talent, both behind and in front of the camera, and this trailer immediately got me excited. I think it will replicate what made The Winter Soldier the best Marvel movie so far which is going beyond being a good superhero film and at its center simply being a good film.

Captain America: Civil War, stars Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey. Jr, Anthony Mackie, Jeremy Renner, Daniel Brühl, Chadwick Boseman, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Emily VanCamp, Martin Freeman, and Don Cheadle, is set to hit theaters on May 6, 2016.
