Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. Finds Another Female Lead, Loses Its Villain

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is set to begin production early next year, and casting is under way.

Familiar faces (and voices) will return to Marvel’s surprise hit of 2014, including Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper), and Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel).

Now we know who else will be joining them: French-Canadian actress Pom Klementieff. According to Variety, she had “an edge with execs and Gunn since the studio started testing women for the unknown role.”

A relative unknown, Klementieff is most well-known for her role in Spike Lee’s Oldboy.

There’s no word on who she’ll play but people are speculating Mantis or Moondragon, Drax’s daughter.

This isn’t the only casting news, however. Oscar-winner Matthew McConaughey reportedly turned down the villain role for the sequel. We will not be seeing Lee Pace’s Ronan again, and if Josh Brolin reprises his role as Thanos, it will most likely be supporting again.

So the studio is still on the hunt for their villain.

Director James Gunn will return to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which is set to hit theaters on May 5, 2017.

Are you excited for more Guardians? Do you think McConaughey would have made a good villain and are you looking forward to another female character? Sound off in the comments!
