Lucasfilm Announces Second Star Wars Anthology Film Is About Your Favorite Scoundrel

If you were looking forward to a solo Boba Fett film, we’re sorry to bring some bad news. However, if you like Han Solo (and who doesn’t?), we’re happy to bring some awesome news.

StarWars.com announced the second Star Wars Anthology film will be about a young Han Solo, directed by The LEGO Movie and 21 Jump Street franchise’s Phil Lord and Christopher Miller!

About this new project, the directing duo had this to say:

“This is the first film we’ve worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with. We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us. This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you’ve loved since before you can remember having dreams at all.”

Lord and Miller haven’t had a misstep so far in Hollywood. As Lawrence Kasdan and his son Jon Kasdan, who will pen the script, say: “They’re two of the smartest, funniest and most original filmmakers around, and the ideal choice to tell the story of Han Solo, one of the coolest characters in the galaxy.”

And if you’re going to be making a film about Han Solo, smart, funny, and original are three fantastic traits you should probably have. We’re thrilled about the choices to say the least!

The film will account the time of young Han Solo and how he “became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley.”

Since the comics are canon, could we see Sana Solo in the film and learn about her marriage to Han? That would be interesting.

Signing the Kasdans up to write the script is also promising. The elder Kasdan co-wrote the scripts for The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and The Force Awakens.

Lord and Miller might be some of the busiest people in Hollywood. Also on their schedule is the script for Warner Bro.’s The Flash and Sony’s animated Spider-Man film. There’s no telling how this new film will impact their other projects but frankly, we’re too busy running around screaming “HAN SOLO!” to worry yet.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy seems just as excited as we are:

“It’s not just any filmmaker who can tell the story of such a beloved icon like Han Solo, and I’m excited to say we’ve found the perfect team to handle the task. Larry and Jon know all there is to know about the character, and Chris and Phil will bring their wit, style, energy and heart to tell Han’s story.”

The film is slated for a May 25, 2018 release. Jason McGatlin and Lawrence Kasdan will serve as executive producers, with Kennedy and Will Allegra co-producing.

How do you feel about a young Han Solo film? Are you just as excited as we are? Shout loud enough about it for the Empire to hear in the comments!
