Supergirl TV Series Lands CBS Deal

Last week, it was announced that a Supergirl TV series was in developmental stages. Goods news: Supergirl officially has a series commitment at CBS.

Deadline reports that the deal closed one day after the Supergirl project was taken to the networks. Who knew that Greg Berlanti and Ali Adlerto’s DC superheroine film would get a commitment this quickly?

supergirlThe Supergirl series is set to follow Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El, as she learns to use her powers on earth. In the comics, Kara Zor-El shares Superman’s powers and Kryptonite vulnerability, so fans can look forward to seeing that development on screen.

Berlanti currently heads Arrow and The Flash, while Ali Adlerto produced Chuck and No Ordinary Guy. Berlanti and Adlerto are set to write the script and executive produce the show with Sarah Schechter. Geoff Johns, DC Entertainment’s chief creative officer, has assisted closely with the series’ development.

As the only major network lacking a comic book television series, CBS is the perfect place for the Supergirl TV series to land.

In 1984, Supergirl was adapted into a feature film starring Helen Slater. Laura Vandervoort later appeared as the heroine on The CW’s Smallville. Other characters have taken up the Supergirl helm since the 1950s, but Kara Zor-El has not appeared in a feature around her since the 1984 flop.

DC Entertainment is gunning for the top spot on television with comic-based shows on every major network, excluding the Disney-owned ABC. Gotham airs on Fox this fall. The CW has Arrow, The Flash, and iZombie. And Constantine hits NBC this fall. ABC is tied to Marvel with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter.
